The Curam Recovery® method: what it is, how a class works and the terms explained

Curam Recovery® is Curam's method for active recovery. It combines static and dynamic cupping with soft silicone cups with movement, breath and body awareness, with the aim of supporting circulation, lymph flow, mobility and a calmer nervous system. The method is taught in group classes and online classes by certified instructors, in a half-day training for professionals (Curam Recovery® Method Training) and in formats for home use: the Curam Recovery Kit with a 30-day programme and the guided ritual Curam Recovery® Meditation. This page explains what the method is, how a class works, what the different terms mean and how to do it yourself at home.

What is Curam Recovery®?

Most people associate cupping with a treatment you receive lying down at a therapist's. Curam Recovery® turns that around: you do the cupping yourself, on yourself, and combine it with movement and breath. A static cup is placed on a tight area, for example the calf or the trapezius, and stays on while you do calm movements that make the muscle work under the cup. Dynamic cupping, where the cup is glided over oiled skin, is used to get circulation and lymph flow going in larger areas such as thighs and back. Calm breathing and presence in the body is the third component, and it is why many describe a session as both physical and mental recovery.

The method rests on the same principles as all cupping with silicone cups: the negative pressure lifts skin, connective tissue and superficial muscle layers, draws blood into the area and stimulates the lymph. The basics are in Cupping – the complete guide. What sets Curam Recovery® apart is the combination with active movement and that the format is made for groups and self-care, not the treatment table.

How does a Curam Recovery® class work?

A class is led by a certified instructor and takes place on a mat, in a group on site or live online. Each participant has their own set of cups and oil. A typical structure:

  1. Landing: a few minutes of calm breathing to wind down.
  2. Dynamic cupping: the cup is glided with oil over larger areas, often calves, thighs and back, in slow strokes towards the heart.
  3. Static cupping with movement: cups are placed on tight areas such as calves, thighs or shoulders and stay on while the instructor guides gentle movements and stretches.
  4. Relaxation: the cups come off and the class ends lying down, with focus on breath and body awareness.

The Curam Recovery® Flow variant puts more emphasis on flowing movement between the cupping segments. Upcoming classes, workshops and live online sessions (such as the evening class Reset & Recover) are listed on Curam Events.

Who is the method for?

A Curam Recovery® session at home (15 minutes)

  1. 2 min: sit or lie comfortably, breathe out slowly, longer than you breathe in.
  2. 5 min dynamic cupping: oil calves and thighs with the body oil and glide the Dynamic Cup in slow strokes from ankle towards the back of the knee and from knee towards the groin.
  3. 5 min static cupping with movement: place two static cups on the calves or shoulders. Do slow calf raises or shoulder rolls while the cups stay on.
  4. 3 min: remove the cups, lie down, let the breath settle on its own.

Step-by-step technique for the whole body is in Cupping at home. If you want to be guided, Curam Recovery® Meditation is the simplest start, and the Recovery Kit contains both the cups and the 30-day programme.

Safety

Do not cup over wounds, rashes, varicose veins or fresh injuries, and keep static cups on for a shorter time at first. If you are pregnant, take blood thinners or have a vascular, skin or lymphatic condition, talk to your healthcare provider before you start. Full list: When to avoid cupping.

Frequently asked questions about Curam Recovery®

Is Curam Recovery® the same thing as cupping?

Cupping is the technique. Curam Recovery® is a method that uses cupping with silicone cups together with movement, breath and body awareness, in a format made for groups and self-care.

Do I need prior experience to join a class?

No. Classes are guided step by step and suit beginners. The cups are soft and you dose the pressure yourself by how hard you squeeze the cup.

How do I become an instructor?

Through Curam Recovery® Method Training, a half day on Zoom with video material before and after. The Body Kit Small is included and you receive a certificate on completion. If you want to lead a licensed class concept, Curam Somatic® is the next step.

Can I do the method at home without an instructor?

Yes. The Recovery Kit includes a guided video course and a 30-day programme, and Curam Recovery® Meditation is a guided 15-minute ritual. Both are based on the same static and dynamic cupping as the classes.

How often should I do a session?

Two to four times a week is a good rhythm for most people. Dynamic cupping can be done often; static cupping on the same spot should get a couple of days' rest if you have marks.
