About Cupping
What is cupping?
Cupping works like an inverse massage – instead of pressing, the cup creates a vacuum that lifts the tissue. This stimulates blood circulation, releases tension, and supports the body's natural recovery.
What are the effects of cupping?
Cupping contributes to deep tissue massage which, among other things, increases blood flow, releases tension in muscles and fascia, supports lymphatic drainage, and can reduce swelling and soreness.
What happens in the body when you cup yourself?
When the cup is placed on the skin and pressed against it, a vacuum is created, causing the cup to adhere and lift the skin and connective tissue. The cup draws fluids, stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, and helps to loosen and separate the connective tissue. This increases circulation in the body and helps the body to more easily transport nutrients and oxygen, eliminate more waste products, and aids the body's ability to heal itself.
When we increase circulation, we reduce stagnation, which can help you reduce tension and swelling, increase muscle relaxation, and improve flexibility and mobility. It also enhances skin elasticity and minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
What does research say about cupping?
What we know from the limited scientific studies that have been conducted is that cupping works by expanding the capillaries and increasing the amount of fluid entering and leaving tissues. While there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that cupping can be effective, very few human clinical trials have been conducted so far, making it difficult to "prove" many of the benefits of cupping therapy. But with that said, it has worked for millions of people for thousands of years. Email support@bycuram.com if you would like to access various research reports.
Who can benefit from cupping?
Almost anyone can benefit from cupping. Curam's cups are very user-friendly and can easily be used at home, in the office, at the gym, while traveling, alone or with a partner.
What does cupping feel like?
Most people find cupping massage very relaxing (especially afterwards), and that stiffness and tension are perceived to decrease. Cupping is generally not painful, but depending on the individual's sensitivity and physical condition, as well as the intensity of the treatment, one may experience moderate discomfort.
Cupping can therefore be felt quite strongly, but should not normally be painful. Redness or a sensation of warmth in the cupped area is an indication of increased blood flow to that area and nothing to worry about.
How long does it take before one feels or experiences a result?
In many cases, the result (depending on what you are aiming for) may only be felt and experienced after a couple of cupping sessions. Many people experience an immediate effect. With regular use, there is a high chance that you will experience increased mobility, muscle relaxation, improved circulation, improved skin elasticity, reduced swelling, and much more. The results are cumulative, so regular use is recommended for the best effect.
Is there any similarity between cupping and acupuncture?
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, both cupping and acupuncture promote "Qi" by drawing energy and promoting blood flow to the area of the body experiencing inflammation or poor lymph and blood circulation. (According to TCM, Qi is the life energy that flows through the body in energy channels, known as meridians. When Qi flows freely, we have health. If this Qi becomes blocked or stagnant, problems can arise and we experience symptoms.)
Can you cup on inflamed areas?
Regarding inflammation, it's difficult to give one blanket statement. It depends on the size of the inflammation, whether it's acute or chronic. If it's red, throbbing, and hot, you should avoid cupping the area as it will only irritate it further. While in some cases it's fine to cup to get the circulation going, start carefully (a few minutes) and observe how your body reacts so that it doesn't get irritated. Begin by trying to cup around the area instead; this way, the effect of increased circulation can also spread to the irritated area, increasing blood flow there without needing to cup directly on it. If you are unsure, consult the person who assessed the inflammation.
How does face cupping work?
The suction created by the cups draws new blood into the skin area under the cup. This supplies the surrounding tissue with fresh blood and promotes the formation of new blood vessels. It also helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, plumping and firming your skin while assisting with lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling.
Naturally, without injections or surgery.
What are the benefits of facial cupping?
The gentle suction helps drain lymph nodes and increases the circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the face. This can lead to a more radiant appearance, reduce puffiness, and support the skin's natural renewal.
Is facial cupping the same as body cupping?
Facial cupping is based on the same principle as body cupping. The cups are used to separate the skin from deeper layers of fascia and to stimulate blood and lymph circulation in a similar way. Facial cups are smaller and softer and should only be used dynamically, i.e., moving the cup constantly to prevent cupping marks. Body cupping can be performed both dynamically and statically.
What is facial cupping?
Facial cupping is an alternative therapy from TCM, where cups are placed on the skin to create a local vacuum. It is often used to help with inflammation, tension, and to increase blood flow.
What is the difference between facial cupping and Gua Sha or Jade Rollers?
There are several tools for your face to use in your skincare routine. Although there is a big trend right now for some of them, the massage methods are very old and well-known in traditional Chinese medicine. They are all easy to use and work a bit like yoga for your face. The jade roller might be the quickest to use, as you roll it over the skin, but many may find that Gua Sha provides a deeper effect when it comes to tension and swelling.
You can store the jade roller in the fridge to give the skin a cooling effect when you use it, while the Gua sha should be stored at room temperature. Unlike these two, facial cups are designed for you to gently lift the facial tissue, which promotes blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, and stimulates the facial cells responsible for collagen production.
Which cup is recommended if you have fibromyalgia or a lot of body pain?
For people with fibromyalgia or body pain, we recommend the dynamic mini-cup. It is easier to handle than the standard dynamic cup and has a softer vacuum pressure, making it gentle and easier to use, especially if you have weaker hands. The mini-cup works for both dynamic and static treatment and can be used on the entire body. Static cups usually work well too; start very gently with soft pressure and a short duration, and see what suits you best. If you are in any doubt, consult your doctor before you start cupping yourself.
Can cupping help with fibromyalgia and touch sensitivity?
Yes, many of our users with fibromyalgia have found that Curam's cups can provide relief. We recommend starting gently with light pressure and always listening to your body.
How often can I cup myself?
Cupping can be used regularly, but how often depends on the area, intensity, and how your body reacts. This is individual. We recommend starting very carefully and allowing your body to get used to it. Follow the recommendations in our instruction videos, which you can find under each cup on the website. Listen to your body's signals and allow time between sessions if the area feels tender.
Is it normal to get marks after cupping?
Yes, marks can appear, especially with static cupping on the body or with facial cupping if the treatment has been more intense than the skin tolerates. The marks are usually harmless and disappear on their own after a few days. We recommend starting very gently and allowing the body and skin to get used to it. Follow the recommendations in our instructional videos, which you can find under each cup on the website.
Curam cups
How do Curam cups differ from other cupping tools?
Curam's cups are designed and developed in Sweden in collaboration with trained massage therapists to achieve the best design, correct flexibility, and suction capacity. Our cups are made from durable, "BPA-free food grade silicone," which means they are 100% eco-friendly silicone. They are ergonomically designed and easy to grip, antimicrobial, easy to wash, and easy to use. The Curam Static massage cup is suitable for static use, while the Curam Dynamic massage cup can be used for both static and dynamic cupping, most suitable for larger body areas. Cups made with low-quality silicone can easily break down and potentially introduce bacteria, so be careful when making your choice.
What are Curam's cups made of?
Curam cups are made from 100% premium quality silicone, which consists of four abundant and readily available natural elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and silicon; silicon is the second most common element in the earth's crust (found, for example, in dust and sand). These elements are heated to create a liquid-like substance that is then cured, hardened, and formed into our cups.
Silicone is a miracle product in that it is a non-porous, non-toxic material that can withstand temperatures from -150 to 460 degrees Fahrenheit.
Our cups are made from 100% high-quality food-grade silicone, which is BPA-free, phthalate-free, lead-free, latex-free, PVC-free, nitrosamine-free, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and sterilized.
Quality controls are strictly performed by SGS to ensure that the silicone used for Curam cups meets both REACH and ROHS standards.
How long does a silicone cup last?
At least 5 years. If the cup is exposed to strong sunlight or very high temperatures (above 200° C), the color may fade, especially the pink.
Why silicone as a material?
Our silicone is made from 100% pure eco-friendly silicone, making it both environmentally friendly and gentle on your skin (unlike rubber cups), and with a long lifespan. The silicone is very flexible, allowing you to easily control the suction level by simply squeezing the cups harder or more gently, depending on your preferences.
How do I recycle silicone?
Silicone cannot be recycled at regular recycling centres; instead, you should dispose of it with your combustible household waste, where it will be incinerated. Silicone does not release any hazardous substances when burned.
How many cups do I need?
It depends on which areas you want to treat and how effective or intense a treatment you desire. With more cups, you can save time and treat multiple areas simultaneously by combining static and dynamic use. When multiple cups are placed on the same area, the treatment is perceived as more powerful and deeper-acting.
My skin hurts a little when I massage with the cup – is that normal?
Yes, that's normal. If it feels uncomfortably painful, especially in areas with a lot of cellulite, you can reduce the suction or work more superficially. Always listen to your body.
Why should I use Curam facial cups?
Curam face cups are designed to glide smoothly on your skin, with adjustable vacuum strength and a size that fits most adult faces. Made from 100% eco-friendly silicone and free from BPA's, PVC and Toxins.
I'm finding the dynamic cup too hard to use, what should I do?
The dynamic cup may feel hard at first, but the more you use it, as it is 100% pure silicone and thus a natural material, it will soon soften and become more flexible and pliable. See our instructional video on how to soften it faster by using both hands and pressing the cup from both sides, all around, to soften it before using it on the body. It can also accelerate the process to use it in a sauna and in a warm shower to soften the silicone faster, or to pour warm water into the cup and then press it from all sides. If you have problems with weak hands, it may be too hard in some cases regardless, and then the dynamic mini cup is preferable as it has thinner walls, softer silicone, and is therefore not as hard.
My bottle of oil wasn't completely full?
The bottle is larger than the 50/150 ml for which the oil is measured. This is because the oil consists of only natural ingredients and different temperatures can affect the oil, causing it to both swell and freeze. Therefore, we have left room for the oil to expand. The fact that the oil can change form in different ways does not affect the oil's quality.
Can I use a different oil for facial cupping?
Yes, you can use a different oil for facial cupping, but it's important to choose one that is suitable for your skin type and safe for the face. Look for oils that provide good glide and are non-comedogenic, meaning they won't clog pores. Curam Face Oil, however, is specifically formulated to work effectively with facial cupping, offering the right balance of nourishment and glide while supporting skin health during the treatment. If you choose another oil, make sure it complements your skincare routine and does not cause irritation.
How do I clean my Curam cups?
After use, clean the cups with lukewarm water and soap or dishwashing liquid. Let them air dry before storing.
Is it normal for static cups to feel a bit sharp at first?
The static cups are designed to provide a secure grip and stay in place, even on narrower body parts. The sharp sensation usually subsides as the body gets used to it.
How to use the cups
How often can one get cupping therapy?
For beginners, we recommend starting with cupping approximately 3 times a week, for both the body and face. This can then be increased as needed and as the body/face adjusts. The body usually tolerates more cupping, and for some, daily cupping works well. For static body cupping, start with a couple of minutes per area, and for dynamic cupping, perform a few strokes per area and gradually increase based on how it feels to you.
If you are cupping your entire face and performing lymphatic drainage, we recommend cupping 3-4 times a week. It can be beneficial to take a rest day occasionally, especially with lymphatic drainage, to allow the skin time to recover. The mini cups can be used more frequently or for spot treatment with the large facial cup on specific parts of the face. Experiment and see what works best for you—the most important thing is to start gently and listen to your body's signals.
Should the cup be moved in any special way?
For static use, simply leave the cup attached to the desired area. For dynamic cupping, move the cup around with either zigzag, up and down movements, or move the cup from side to side. For lymphatic massage, it is good to move the cup in the direction of lymph nodes such as the groin, knee bends, or armpit.
For facial cupping, start in the middle of the face. Use slow sweeping gliding massage strokes and perform outward and upward movements. Move the cup constantly to prevent cupping marks. Work one side of the face at a time. Finish with a few lymphatic strokes from the hairline down towards the collarbones.
How do I use the cups?
You place the underside of the cup against the skin, then simply compress the cups against the skin by squeezing them on both sides. This creates a vacuum that affects the connective tissue in muscles and the subcutaneous layer.
You can either leave the cup stationary or move it slowly over the skin on the areas to be treated. To move the cup around, the skin should be lubricated beforehand so that the cup can glide easily, or use it in the shower with water and shower gel.
You can also place the cups over muscle knots and trigger points and then continue working on another spot with a different cup. This way, you can continue the treatment while the cup actively works on the affected area.
How do I make the cup stay in place?
For dynamic use, apply Curam Body & Massage Oil to ensure the cup glides smoothly and adheres tightly to the skin. The oil will also enhance the benefits of your cupping session. You can also use the cup in the shower with water and shower gel. Adjust the vacuum suction by compressing your cup more or less. It is normal for the cups to release occasionally; simply reposition them. Massage movements should be slow. Find what works best for your skin type. For the body, we offer two different cup sizes that you can switch between and combine, depending on the area you wish to treat. Remember that everyone's skin elasticity is different and that skin condition (dryness, elasticity) can change from day to day.
Some days cups may glide without issues, and on another day they may release more easily; simply reapply and continue with your cupping technique. With a little practice, you will discover what works best for you. For facial cupping, apply Curam Facial & Massage Oil to the area you wish to treat to help the cup glide smoothly over the skin and to nourish it. Gently apply the cup to the skin over the area you wish to treat and squeeze each side to create a vacuum. Move the cup slowly, upwards and outwards.
Static VS Dynamic Use
Both methods are effective against stagnation as both loosen and separate connective tissue and increase fluid flow, blood circulation, and lymphatic circulation. Dynamic cupping may be preferred when there is more than one trigger point in an area and when working on larger areas with movement, while static cupping is preferred for treating specific trigger points and smaller body areas. Dynamic cupping is recommended for the treatment of cellulite. The effect is essentially the same with both techniques, but the experience may differ. For facial cupping, only dynamic use to prevent cupping marks.
Which different cupping techniques do you recommend?
Static Cupping
Place “Curam dynamic” or “Curam Static” on the desired area. Press the cup against the skin, squeeze both sides of the cup, and then gently release to create a vacuum seal. For "Curam Static", you can also adjust the vacuum from above by pressing down from the top.
For static cupping, leave the cup in one spot and let the cup do its work. You can have several cups on at the same time in different places. For an even better grip, you can use body oil on the skin before applying the cup. You can also use the cups in the shower with or without shower gel.
To prevent cupping marks, do not leave the cup on for too long, a maximum of a couple of minutes. Experiment and see how your skin reacts.
Suggested use: 2-3 times a week, 3-5 minutes per area.
Dynamic Cupping
Apply a body oil or lotion to your dry skin or use in the shower with shower cream. Place “Curam dynamic”, one or as many cups as you wish, on the desired area. Press the cup against the skin, squeeze both sides of the cup where it is widest, and then gently release to create a vacuum seal.
Then slowly move the cup along the arm, leg, buttocks, back, or other parts of the body. Use sweeping/gliding massage movements in zigzag patterns, circular movements, or up and down movements.
To prevent cupping marks, keep your cup moving at all times and do not leave the cup in one position (static cupping).
Suggested use: 2-3 times a week, 3-5 minutes per area.
For Facial Cupping
Apply Curam facial and massage oil to the area you want to treat, to help the cup glide smoothly over the skin and provide nourishment. Gently apply the cup to the skin over the area you want to treat and squeeze each side to create a vacuum. Use slow, sweeping massage strokes and perform outward and upward movements.
Keep the cup moving at all times to prevent cupping marks. Work one side of the face at a time. Finish with a few lymphatic strokes from the hairline down towards the collarbones.
Is there anything else I can do to improve the cupping effect?
When undergoing cupping therapy, the effect is enhanced by maintaining a healthy and nutritious diet and good cardiovascular fitness. It is important to drink plenty of water as the body's excretion of waste products increases. By using Curam Body & Massage oil, you improve the gliding effect for dynamic use and enhance the cupping's effect due to the oil's various properties
Are there any areas on the body where I shouldn't use the cups?
Curam's dynamic and static massage cups can be used on the entire body, except directly on the groin, throat, face, armpits, genitals, and lower abdomen. However, Curam's facial cups can be used everywhere as the vacuum is much weaker.
Consult your doctor before use if you are taking strong medications. Avoid cupping on infected skin, severe psoriasis, or muscle inflammation, as these conditions may worsen due to the stimulation provided by cupping. Also, avoid cupping on new scars and allow at least 6 weeks before starting to treat these areas. Start gently and preferably use Curam's facial cup initially.
Are there any places on the body where I shouldn't use the cups?
Curam dynamic and static massage cups can be used on the entire body except directly on the groin, neck, face, armpits, genitals, and lower abdomen. You can use the Curam facial cup everywhere because the vacuum is much weaker.
Consult your doctor before use if you are on strong medication. Avoid cupping if you are pregnant, have infected skin, severe psoriasis, or muscle inflammation, as you should not stimulate the muscles as much as cupping can do. Avoid cupping on new scars; wait at least 6 weeks, start gently, and preferably use the Curam facial cup initially.
Suggestions for aftercare following facial cupping?
Drink plenty of water and if you experience redness, use something to cool, soothe, and nourish the skin after your treatment.
How often can you cup your face?
If you cup your entire face and perform lymphatic drainage, we recommend cupping 3-4 times a week. It can be beneficial to have a rest day occasionally, especially if you are doing lymphatic drainage, to allow the skin time to recover. On rest days, you can instead use the mini facial cup to spot-treat certain areas, if you wish. Always start gently and adjust the treatment to suit your skin.
How should I use my facial cups at home?
Start by applying Curam facial & massage oil, then begin by stimulating the lymph nodes at the collarbones, then place the cup against the skin you wish to treat and squeeze the cup from both sides and then slowly release it so that a vacuum is created and it adheres to the skin. Start in the center of the face and gently sweep it outwards and upwards. For more information and inspiration on how to use your cups, visit Curam's cupping program.
Can I cup my face if I've had Botox?
If you have received Botox, it is recommended to avoid facial cupping immediately after the treatment. Botox needs time to stabilize in the muscles, and cupping can affect the results by altering the placement of the injections.
Generally, you should wait approximately two weeks after Botox before starting facial cupping. It is best to consult your practitioner or doctor for specific recommendations based on your treatment. If you experience swelling after Botox, cupping can be beneficial as it stimulates lymphatic flow, which can sometimes be negatively affected by Botox. With regular cupping, you can also train your facial muscles to relax, which can have a positive effect on wrinkle formation over time.
Are there any areas on the body where the cups should not be used?
Curam's dynamic and static massage cups can be used on the entire body except for the groin, throat, face (with the exception of face cups), directly on the spine, and other sensitive areas. For medical conditions, we always recommend consulting a healthcare professional.
I am pregnant/breastfeeding, can I use the cups?
Facial cupping is fine, but we recommend extra caution with body cupping during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cupping provides strong stimulation of blood circulation and at the same time activates the body's natural detoxification processes; when breastfeeding, this means that some waste products can then be excreted via breast milk. How the body reacts is individual and depends on the woman's health status. For some, cupping works well even during breastfeeding, while others may be more sensitive. During pregnancy, cupping of the abdomen and lower back should be avoided, as the stimulation can be too powerful and the area is close to the fetus. Blood circulation in the legs is also affected during pregnancy, and the veins are often more strained, which can increase the risk of blood clots. For this reason, we recommend avoiding cupping on the inner thighs and calves. Instead, focus on areas that feel safe and provide relief, such as the shoulders, upper back, and face. Many pregnant women, for example, experience relief from tension and reduced swelling with gentle cupping. Also for so-called restless legs through very gentle treatment of the legs (avoid the inside). Always start carefully and with low intensity. We recommend that you consult a doctor or therapist before using the cups during pregnancy or breastfeeding, to ensure that the treatment is adapted to your health status and the area being treated.
How can I use the cups to help with headaches and migraines?
Apply Curam oil to the neck to create a better suction effect with the cups. Apply 1-2 static cups to the neck and leave them on for up to 10 minutes. You can continue to massage the area for a few more minutes to relieve any tension. Use the facial cup to massage your forehead, temples, and jaws. See our cupping program for headaches.
Can I use the mini facial cup on my entire face?
Yes, you can use the mini facial cup on your entire face. It is primarily designed for smaller and more sensitive areas, such as around the eyes, lips, and nose, but it also works effectively on the entire face. The mini facial cup is particularly beneficial if you have sensitive skin, as it allows for precise control and gentle application. Applying a suitable facial oil helps the cup glide easily and protects the skin during the treatment.
I've learned that you should only cup from bottom to top? Is it okay to cup in both directions?
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), where cupping originated, cupping is performed in both directions—both upwards and downwards. The main purpose of cupping according to TCM is to improve the flow of qi (life energy) and blood in the body. The techniques and directions are adjusted depending on the treatment goal, the person's health condition, and individual needs. For optimal lymphatic massage, the cup should be moved in the direction of the lymph nodes. In all areas below the collarbone, the cup should be pulled upwards from below towards the nearest larger lymph node. For the face, for maximum lymphatic massage, the cup is instead pulled downwards from above towards the lymph node at the collarbone.
Which cup should I use to treat cellulite?
Use our Dynamic Cup together with Curam Body & Massage Oil, and feel free to follow our instructions in our cupping program Skin for the win.
Can I cup my face if I have had fillers?
If you have had fillers, you should avoid facial cupping immediately after the treatment. Cupping can create pressure and movement that can affect the placement of the filler and lead to undesirable results.
We recommend waiting about four weeks after a filler treatment before you start facial cupping. Always consult with your practitioner for exact guidelines based on your specific treatment. If you experience swelling after fillers, cupping can be beneficial as it stimulates lymphatic flow, which can sometimes be negatively affected by fillers. Through cupping, you can also experience increased skin contact and an improved sensation in your face.
Which cup should I buy for tense shoulders and neck?
We recommend our static massage cups, which can be easily attached to the shoulders, neck, and other tense areas. You can also use our dynamic mini-cup to actively massage these areas by moving the cup in gentle motions. If it's difficult to reach certain areas on your own, it may be helpful to ask someone for assistance for the best effect.
What cups should I use for lymphatic drainage massage?
It depends on which areas you want to treat. All our massage cups affect the lymphatic flow because they release the fascia and thus facilitate the flow of lymph fluid through the tissues. For lymphatic massage, where you move the cups in the direction of the larger lymph nodes, dynamic cupping is recommended. Depending on which areas you want to treat, you can choose between the facial cups and the dynamic cups. The large facial cup can also be used on the body for gentle lymphatic massage, especially if the skin is sensitive or if you find the dynamic cups too powerful.
Which cups should I use to soften the fascia?
All our massage cups work on the outer layers of the fascia by lifting the skin and connective tissue using the cup's vacuum. The choice of cup depends on which body part you want to treat—face or body—as well as whether you prefer static or dynamic treatment.
I have lipedema, can I cup myself then?
Cupping can be beneficial for those with lipedema, as it can help increase blood circulation, stimulate lymphatic flow, and reduce swelling, which can provide some relief for lipedema. We recommend using a lighter suction and starting gently, especially on sensitive areas. Avoid using static cupping for too long (leaving the cup in one place) to prevent overstimulation of the skin.
For best results, combine cupping with lymphatic massage by moving the cups towards the larger lymph nodes. Depending on the severity of your lipedema, it may be advisable to consult a doctor or a lipedema specialist before starting cupping, to get advice on how to best adapt the treatment based on your health condition.
In my massage training, I was taught that one should only use cupping in an upward motion, as otherwise there's a risk of creating blood clots. Is this true?
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), from which cupping originates and has a tradition spanning several millennia, cupping is practiced in both directions, upwards and downwards. The main purpose of cupping in TCM is to improve the flow of qi (life energy) and blood in the body, which is believed to promote healing and relieve pain. The techniques and directions are adapted depending on the treatment goals and the patient's specific needs. In modern massage training, especially in Western countries, there is sometimes caution regarding certain techniques. Some schools teach that cupping should only be performed in an upward direction to avoid the risk of blood clots. This caution is based on a concern that improper handling of blood vessels can lead to injuries. There is a theoretical risk of creating blood clots if cupping is performed incorrectly, especially in individuals with a predisposition to blood clots. However, it is important to note that there is a lack of extensive scientific studies specifically showing that cupping in a certain direction directly causes blood clots.
There are thus different approaches to cupping, and both Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern Western medicine have their own methods and explanations. Regardless of the school or method, safety and patient well-being are always the highest priority. If there is uncertainty or a risk of complications, caution should always be exercised. As with most things in health, there are no black-and-white answers that apply to everyone but need to be adapted to each individual.
What can happen if I cup statically for too long?
If cups are left on the skin for too long, especially during static cupping (when the cup remains in place), the skin can react with a fluid-filled blister – much like a mild burn or friction blister. This is the same type of reaction that can occur if the skin is exposed to something else for a long time, such as strong sun or chafing shoes. The blister forms because the negative pressure from the cup affects microcirculation and creates too strong a local pressure, which can lead to fluid accumulation between the skin layers. It is not dangerous, but can feel uncomfortable. Here's how to care for the skin if a blister has formed:
- Leave the blister alone. If it is intact, do not puncture it. The blister protects the underlying skin, which is extra sensitive.
- Protect the area if it is at risk of chafing, for example with a breathable plaster or a non-adhesive dressing.
- If the blister breaks or the area is painful, make sure to keep it clean. Gently wash with wound cleanser, possibly use an antibacterial ointment and cover with a sterile compress.
- Contact healthcare if the skin becomes red, stings, oozes pus, or is painful – these may be signs of infection.
- Avoid cupping the area until the skin is fully recovered, to avoid further irritation.
To prevent this from happening again, only cup for a few minutes per area and preferably use a timer. Remember to always listen to your body – less can often be more.
Is facial cupping good for acne?
Facial cupping can be beneficial for skin health and circulation, but not if you have active or inflamed acne. In such cases, cupping can irritate the skin and worsen inflammation. If you have mild acne without ongoing inflammation, a gentle cupping routine, combined with the right oil, can promote lymphatic flow and skin recovery.
When is the best time to start facial cupping?
Many people feel that 25 is a good age to start with facial cupping. Before then, the skin's collagen production and lymphatic system usually work optimally. As we pass 25–30, these processes gradually begin to slow down, and that's when facial cupping can help support the skin, counteract early signs of aging, promote lymphatic flow, and reduce puffiness. Regular facial cupping can therefore act as both preventive skincare and contribute to a healthy, natural glow.
The effects of cupping
How can cupping help athletes' performance?
As many are surely aware, cupping has been demonstrated by "Olympians." It is also practiced by amateurs, CrossFit competitors, runners, swimmers, gymnasts, and other athletes, where cupping plays an important role in injury prevention and recovery. Cupping for athletes engaged in strenuous activities helps increase circulation, reduce muscle stiffness, increase range of motion, improve endurance, flexibility, recovery time, and much more.
Why is cupping effective against cellulite?
Densified connective tissue combined with poor blood circulation is the main cause of the body forming what is known as cellulite skin. Cupping is a deep massage, and as it lifts the skin and connective tissue and stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, it can be an effective treatment for improved skin structure and skin cleansing. We recommend dynamic cupping for cellulite skin together with a good oil that stimulates lymphatic circulation, such as Curam Body and Massage Oil.
How can cupping reduce the appearance of cellulite?
Thighs/Hips/Buttocks: Apply Curam Body & Massage oil to dry skin or use Curam Dynamic in the shower with shower cream. Apply Curam Dynamic and use either a zig-zag motion, upward circular motions towards the heart, or move it up and down to break up the fascia/connective tissue. Start with light cupping on the treated area to begin loosening the fascia and increase the suction as the area softens. When you can move the cup without resistance, glide the cup from the gluteal crease (just below the buttocks) outwards towards the hip and inwards towards the groin where one of the major lymph nodes is located.
Cupping's potential impact on the skin
Cupping increases blood circulation, temperature, and metabolism in the skin, as well as promoting skin respiration. It also draws out waste products from the skin and strengthens the skin's resistance to external stresses.
Cupping's possible effects on Trigger points?
From the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) perspective, trigger points represent blood stagnation at a deeper musculoskeletal level. These points are typically located in the middle of a muscular structure. In addition to being sensitive when touched, trigger points can also feel like a tight band or a "lump" not under the superficial layers of the skin, but in the deeper layers of the muscle structure, and sometimes near the bone.
Persistent poor posture when sitting or walking, carrying or lifting heavy loads, overexertion, overuse of a particular muscle group, and a stressful lifestyle can all contribute to the formation of trigger points.
During the cupping application, a strong, negative pressure is created over the trigger point. This, in turn, stimulates the stagnant blood to move towards the direction of the cup. The negative pressure will also force oxygen-rich blood to flow into the trigger point and release the muscular knot/lump. Sometimes it is difficult to completely eliminate trigger points; these may require more frequent application of cupping, which can be as often as three times a week.
Since trigger points are located in the deepest layers of muscle tissue, a strong cupping method is often required to be effective. Not all trigger points are suitable for cupping therapy due to their anatomical location. In these cases, other methods for releasing trigger points should be used.
In what way could cupping improve lung capacity?
Cupping increases blood circulation, and blood is very important because it delivers nutrients throughout the body. For example, blood converts oxygen from the air we breathe and transports the oxygen to our lungs and the rest of our body.
Can I use the cups on my knees?
It can be very beneficial to cup the muscles surrounding the knee if you
experience tension and stiffness, and also before exercise as a warm-up. In cases of
knee injuries, be a little extra careful and consult your doctor first or contact us for
further questions. After knee surgery, it can be very beneficial to stimulate
circulation with cupping around the knee and for scars – but wait at least 6-8 weeks
before cupping on the scar and preferably start with our face cup for a gentler initial treatment.
Can you cup on scars?
It can be very beneficial to use the Curam facial cup over scars to soften connective tissue and increase circulation in the scar tissue. Do not cup on the scar for the first 6 weeks until the scar has begun to heal. Avoid open wounds and always consult your doctor first if you are unsure. Be very careful and gentle and start by cupping around the area to see how your body reacts. Later, you can use Curam static and dynamic cupping on scars.
What side effects can cupping have?
One of the most appealing benefits of using alternative methods such as cupping is that there are no proven negative side effects, unlike pharmaceutical drugs. The therapeutic benefits of cupping could be the placebo effect, but even if the relief you feel stems from the expectation of relief, it's likely a better option.
The most common misuse of cupping is overuse. This is an intensive therapy and its impact on the body's systems is significant. Less is more.
I got marks after cupping, is that normal?
Yes, it's completely normal. Some people get marks, some don't, some more, others less – it depends partly on your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend that you first massage and warm the skin with your hands and that you create less suction with the cup at the beginning. After a couple of days, when your skin has started to get used to the cupping massage, you can gradually increase the suction. The cups can lead to marks similar to bruises but should not be confused with them.
It is completely harmless and only affects the outermost layers of the skin. According to TCM, if you have good circulation in the area, there will be no marks, and where it is stagnant, bluish marks may appear. These marks usually fade and disappear after a few days. The marks that appear can be the result of waste products rising to the surface, stagnation, previous injury, or lactic acid produced by the muscles. If redness or itching occurs, it is probably due to increased blood circulation. It is also common to get marks if you have sensitive skin.
Can facial cupping cause bad skin?
If you are new to facial cupping, your skin may react and produce pimples initially. This is a sign that circulation is increasing and the cleansing process is starting. This usually normalizes after a few sessions.
What can facial cupping help you with?
It can help to smooth your skin, minimize the appearance of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. All natural without any injections. Tone the contours of your chin, jawline, neck, and décolletage. Reduce puffiness and improve nutrient delivery. Release jaw tension and headaches and can make your face more relaxed.
Is facial cupping better than face yoga?
It depends on your purpose and what you're looking for. You can do both, or continue with the method you prefer. The main difference between facial cupping and face yoga is that face yoga involves massage with your hands and exercises to stimulate the muscles, skin, and lymphatic system. For facial cupping, you use a massage cup to gently lift and stimulate the skin, promoting collagen production and increased blood and lymphatic circulation.
How can I reduce puffiness and get naturally firmer skin?
Using Curam facial cups can help reduce puffiness, as the gentle suction of the cup helps drain lymph nodes and increases the circulation of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the skin. It can also help tone the chin, jawline, and neck.
Is there a risk of capillaries bursting in the skin when cupping the face?
No, as long as you follow our recommendations and keep the cup moving the entire time, there should be no risk of blood vessels bursting. Do not cup if you have very visible blood vessels or very sensitive skin. For more information, please read our section "When to avoid facial cupping."
Are there side effects of facial cupping?
The vacuum created by the cup gives your facial muscles a good workout and can lead to temporary redness, which is completely normal due to increased vascularity in the cupped area. This will disappear shortly. Minor side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and some facial discomfort may occur after treatment. Start gently and do not overdo it. If you experienced bruising on your face after cupping, it may indicate that the suction was too strong for your skin, that you cupped for too long, or that the cup was left in one place. It's important to use light pressure and start gently, 1-3 strokes per area. Always keep the cups moving with soft, gliding motions. To avoid future bruising, start with lighter suction and gradually increase as your skin gets used to the treatment. Make sure to use a good facial oil to help the cups glide smoothly and nourish your skin. We recommend Curam Face & Massage Oil
What benefits can Curam static copper have for breathwork?
The cups can help you connect more easily with different parts of the body and can serve as a shortcut to connect with the breathing muscle. By placing the cups on, for example, the ribcage, you can use them as a reference point and direct your breath there, to expand your breath more easily. As well as to more easily connect with the resting part of the nervous system, the parasympathetic.
What benefits can Curam massage cups have for meditation?
Physical relaxation: By using massage cups during meditation, they can help release tension and increase blood circulation in the treated area. This can contribute to physical relaxation and a more comfortable meditation posture as it can alleviate any discomfort or stiffness that may arise during longer meditation sessions. Improved focus: By using the cups on specific areas, they can serve as an aid to focus attention there during meditation. They can create a sense of increased presence and awareness of the body. The cup can act as a vehicle into the body to increase connection. Energetic balance: According to some traditions in alternative medicine and holistic well-being, the cups can help balance the energy flow in the body, which can be beneficial for meditation and inner harmony. Increased awareness: By using massage cups, you can increase your awareness of your body and the physical sensations that arise during meditation. This can contribute to a deeper understanding of your inner state.
I have dark circles under my eyes - can facial cupping help?
Yes, facial cupping can help with dark circles. The gentle suction stimulates blood flow and supports lymphatic drainage around the eyes, which can reduce discoloration and puffiness.
Doesn't facial cupping stretch the skin?
Facial cupping does not stretch the skin when done correctly. In fact, it can have the opposite effect by improving skin elasticity and promoting a more toned appearance. The gentle suction created by facial cupping stimulates blood flow and collagen production, helping to tighten and lift the skin over time. It's important to use the correct technique—light pressure, gentle gliding movements (never staying in one spot), and starting very gently.
I got bruises on my face after cupping, did I do something wrong?
If you experienced bruising on your face after cupping, it could indicate that the suction was too strong for your skin, that you cupped for too long, or that the cup was left in one spot. It's important to use light pressure and keep the cups moving with gentle, gliding motions. To avoid bruising in the future, start with light suction and gradually increase it as your skin gets used to the treatment. Make sure to use a good facial oil to help the cups glide smoothly and nourish the skin. We recommend Curam Face & Massage Oil.
It hurts a lot when I do cupping, is that normal?
If the fascia (connective tissue) is tight, if you are swollen, have a lot of cellulite, or have exercised a lot, it can sometimes be very painful. But it's not dangerous. If it feels uncomfortably painful, start extra gently with less vacuum suction and don't cup for too long. It's a good idea to start with static use to warm up the area before you start dynamic cupping. The more you increase circulation and soften the connective tissue with the cups, the less pain you will experience in the future. Remember to drink extra water after cupping.
Can cupping affect blood vessels?
Yes, cupping can affect the skin and blood vessels, especially if the skin is weakened or if there are visible blood vessels. This can be due to factors such as age, medication, previous injuries, or other individual variations that affect the sensitivity of the skin and vessels. In some cases, cupping can cause broken blood vessels, but this can be avoided by being careful and adapting the technique to your conditions.
We recommend always starting very gently, regardless of age or experience. Use a mild suction pressure and follow the instructions carefully. For dynamic cupping, where the cup is moved over the skin, you should only do a few strokes per area. For static cupping, where the cup is placed still, you should limit the time to a couple of minutes per area. If the skin reacts with broken blood vessels, it may be good to reduce the suction pressure further and shorten the application time. In some cases, it may be best to completely avoid cupping on areas with very visible blood vessels to avoid causing further impact.
It is also important to use an oil, such as Curam's oil, to allow the cup to glide smoothly over the skin during dynamic cupping. If the skin has already become irritated or reacted, you should avoid cupping on that area again and allow the skin time to recover. To strengthen the skin and improve vascular health, it can be helpful to eat foods rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. These nutrients contribute to stronger blood vessels and better skin health. Serums with vitamin C can also be used to strengthen the skin and reduce visible redness by brightening the skin.
If you are unsure or have sensitive skin, we recommend that you start extra carefully and adapt the cupping to your skin's needs.
Why can the skin react with bruises or small broken blood vessels after facial cupping?
It is quite common for the skin to react with slight redness, bruising, or small broken capillaries after facial cupping. This happens more often if you have thin or sensitive skin, fragile capillaries, if the cup has been left in place for too long, or if it has been moved with too strong a vacuum. The reaction is harmless and usually disappears within a few days. To soothe the skin, you can apply a mild, moisturizing oil or cream with calming ingredients such as aloe vera, chamomile, or lavender to the area. A cold compress can also help with redness. Next time, you can use the cup with lighter pressure, fewer passes per area, and shorter treatment time. Always use a good facial oil such as Curam's facial oil, keep the cup moving, and start gently.
Are there any side effects of facial cupping?
The vacuum provides a thorough workout for the facial muscles and may temporarily cause slight redness or tenderness. This is normal and usually subsides quickly. Always start gently and increase gradually.
Is it normal to feel tired or dizzy after cupping?
Some people may experience fatigue, lightheadedness, or temporary discomfort after cupping. This is usually transient and can be due to increased circulation and the body's reaction to the treatment. Always start carefully and take a break from the cups if you experience dizziness. The next time, start even more carefully.
When to avoid cupping
When should I avoid cupping?
Since cupping acts as a deep tissue massage that increases blood circulation, in certain cases, cupping should be avoided if you experience heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatism, are pregnant, or use blood thinners. Avoid cupping in cases of acute hernias, open wounds, or severe skin problems such as psoriasis, rosacea, and allergic rashes. For some, it may still be okay to cup themselves under the previously mentioned circumstances, while for others it may be inappropriate, depending on the level and state of health. You should not cup over varicose veins or large superficial blood vessels, nor over moles that protrude above the skin surface. Instead, cup around those areas and reduce the vacuum by easing the vacuum pressure when you are near varicose veins. Do not cup if you are a cancer patient undergoing treatment, have a high fever, acute infections and/or inflammation, or if you are a stroke patient. Cupping should be used with caution by children and the elderly, and always consult your doctor if you are unsure. For facial cupping, do not cup directly over where Botox or fillers have been injected, or be extra careful in these areas and see how it affects you.
I am pregnant/breastfeeding, can I use the cup?
Facial cupping is fine, but we recommend extra caution with body cupping during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cupping provides a strong stimulation of blood circulation and at the same time activates the body's natural detoxification processes; when breastfeeding, this means that some waste products can then be excreted via breast milk. How the body reacts is individual and depends on the woman's health status. For some, cupping works well even during breastfeeding, while others may be more sensitive. During pregnancy, cupping of the abdomen and lower back should be avoided, as the stimulation can be too powerful and the area is close to the fetus. Blood circulation in the legs is also affected during pregnancy and the veins are often more strained, which can increase the risk of blood clots. For this reason, we recommend avoiding cupping on the inner thighs and calves. Instead, focus on areas that feel safe and provide relief, such as the shoulders, upper back, and face. Many pregnant women, for example, experience relief from tension and reduced swelling with gentle cupping. Also for so-called restless legs through very careful treatment of the legs (avoid the inner side). Always start gently and with low intensity. We recommend that you consult a doctor or therapist before using the cups during pregnancy or breastfeeding, to ensure that the treatment is adapted to your health status and the area being treated.
When should you avoid facial cupping?
Be careful when cupping directly on Botox and fillers. You should avoid cupping your face or be extra careful if you suffer from a skin condition, severe acute acne or rosacea, eczema, broken capillaries, warts, sun-damaged skin, raised moles, over new scars, herpes, or very sensitive, thin and irritated skin. Do not use the Facial Cupping Cup too close to your eyes as it is a bit too powerful for this area; a smaller cup is fine as long as you cup with gentle pressure and are careful. Consult your skincare therapist before cupping if you suffer from a skin condition or if you are currently using blood thinners. Temporary redness is normal due to increased vascularity in the cupped area. The redness will disappear shortly. Generally, we advise being very careful or avoiding facial cupping if you have rosacea, as there is increased vascularization and these vessels react strongly to stimuli such as cupping. While some with milder rosacea may experience positive effects from facial cupping. Facial Cupping Cups are not intended to diagnose, prevent, or treat any disease, metabolic disorder, illness, or health problem. Minor side effects may occur after treatment, such as dizziness, nausea, and slight facial discomfort.
Can you only cup therapy on the heart?
When it comes to cupping near the heart, some schools claim that one should only cup upwards, otherwise there is a risk of blood clots. According to the traditional Chinese medicine approach, which Curam is based on, cupping is done in both directions, depending on what one wants to achieve. Then everything depends on the person and their health condition. If you are at risk of blood clots or if you have had one, we advise you to check with your doctor first. Whether or not you should cup also depends on how large it was, if there are any remnants of it left in the body, and other health conditions.
Can you cup the body if you have rheumatism?
It depends on the severity of your rheumatism; for some with mild rheumatism, it can be beneficial and provide some relief. If you have very severe rheumatism with very tender and swollen joints, it could cause irritation since it's an inflammatory state. So, the best thing is to test it cautiously and see how your body reacts. Adjust the suction power of the cups so you don't set them to maximum immediately; instead, attach them gently and carefully. If you do it moderately, and not too much or too hard, there are usually no problems, but start cautiously and observe how your body reacts, as it varies from person to person. It also depends on your overall health. If you are unsure, consult your doctor beforehand.
Can you cup your face when you have rosacea?
Generally, we advise being very careful or avoiding cupping if you have rosacea, as there is increased vascularity and these vessels react strongly to stimuli such as cupping. While some individuals with milder rosacea may experience positive effects from facial cupping. When you have an outbreak, avoid cupping directly on the inflamed area; in some cases, it's fine to cup other areas of the face. It can be very beneficial to gently cup the neck and chest with a facial cup to stimulate the lymphatic system. Once the inflammation has subsided, after a few days or a week, most people can cup their face – gently, over the area that was inflamed. But as mentioned, it's very individual; to be safe, if you are unsure, consult your skin therapist first, and if you want to try it, start very gently, one stroke per spot, 3 times a week, and preferably in front of a mirror to immediately see how the skin reacts. For some, the mini cup over the entire face is sufficient, as that pressure is milder.
Can I cup on my varicose veins?
No, you should avoid cupping directly on varicose veins. Cupping increases blood flow and pressure in the area, which can worsen varicose veins and draw them out further or cause irritation. Instead, cup gently around the area to stimulate blood circulation.
Can I get cupping therapy if I have visible blood vessels on my legs?
If you have visible blood vessels on your legs, such as superficial veins, varicose veins, or spider veins, you should be careful when using massage cups. Cupping massage increases blood circulation and can in some cases lead to further irritation of the already visible blood vessels. This can make the blood vessels more prominent or, in the worst case, worsen the condition.
It is best to consult a doctor or licensed therapist before you start using massage cups on your own if you have problems with visible blood vessels. For lymphatic massage, you can use the facial cup, as it has a significantly weaker vacuum suction and is gentler on the skin.
Can I get cupping if I have visible blood vessels on my face?
You should be careful with facial cupping as it increases blood flow, which can make blood vessels more prominent or further damaged. For many, the mini facial cup works well as it has a weaker vacuum suction. The best thing is to test very carefully and see how your skin reacts, or to consult a dermatologist or skincare specialist for a professional opinion based on your skin's condition.
I have osteoarthritis, can I use your cups then?
Depending on the degree of osteoarthritis and individual circumstances, cupping can be perceived to provide relief, as it increases blood circulation and reduces muscle tension. It is important to start gently with the massage cups and to experiment. Feel free to use a milder suction and avoid cupping directly on painful areas. If you have weak hands, it can be difficult to squeeze the cups, especially the large dynamic cup. In such cases, our other cups may be easier to use and gentler. Always consult a doctor before you start using the cups if you feel unsure.
I got blisters after cupping, what could this be due to?
Blisters after cupping are usually caused by the cups being left on the same area for too long, which can irritate the skin and cause fluid-filled blisters. Therefore, it is important to follow our recommendations to start gently and never leave the cup in the same place for more than 20 minutes.
If you have developed blisters despite following these instructions, it may be due to other factors, such as an imbalance in the body showing through the skin or taking strong medications. For questions or concerns, please contact us at info@bycuram.com for advice or, even better, your doctor.
Is cupping recommended for lumbago, and should one use dynamic or static cups?
For medical conditions, we always recommend consulting healthcare professionals. However, many people experience relief with gentle cupping. The dynamic cup is well-suited for massage around the affected area.
About blood circulation
Why is good blood circulation important?
Circulation is the term used to describe the continuous movement that carries blood around the body and is made possible by the pumping of the heart. This movement, or blood flow, occurs in a network known as blood vessels. Circulation can be increased through exercise, physical activity, dry brushing, and massage. Blood circulation ensures that nutrients, oxygen, and hormones are transported to the body's tissues. At the same time, the blood also carries away waste products to promote the health of the body's tissues. Poor circulation can lead to problems with fitness, memory, muscle mass, cold hands and feet, dizziness, concentration, fatigue, and angina.
What other things besides cupping massage can positively affect blood circulation?
An important factor for circulation is what you eat. Food is incredibly important for our well-being and it affects all parts of your body and mind. The circulatory system is also strongly affected by what you consume – and what you don't. All forms of exercise stimulate blood circulation.
About the connective tissue
What is connective tissue/fascia?
Connective tissue (also called fascia) is found in virtually all organs of the body, around blood vessels, cartilage, tendons, and also acts as a sheath for muscles. Its purpose is to hold tissues and organs together in our bodies. Connective tissue consists mostly of two proteins, collagen and and elastin. It also consists of a lot of fluid that makes it flexible.
It is living tissue and the uppermost layer is found 2 millimeters under the skin. When the fascia/connective tissue stiffens, we stiffen. Not least after a good night's sleep. When it is elastic, we are soft and mobile.
Most people probably see the skeleton as holding up the body, but the truth is rather that the fascia holds the skeleton in place. The skeletal bones "float" in a viscous fluid of fascia.
If you sit a lot, the fascia conforms to a sitting body. A mobile lifestyle is therefore good for having healthy fascia.
What affects connective tissue/fascia?
Prolonged physical exertion can cause changes in the connective tissue. Injuries in the body are naturally repaired by the formation of new connective tissue. However, with persistent strain, such as stress and muscle tension, too much new connective tissue is produced. It becomes stiff and inelastic, which impairs blood circulation and mobility.
Muscle tension and muscle imbalances, psychological or physical pain, and circulatory disorders are other examples of conditions that cause changes in the connective tissue.
What is the result of stiff/densified connective tissue?
Stiffened connective tissue can feel like "the suit is too tight"; it's taut and pulls at the tissue when you move. It's beneficial not to let the sluggish fascia fluid stiffen, which is why exercise, dry brushing, and connective tissue massage like cupping are good.
About the lymphatic system
What can be the result of a sluggish lymphatic system?
A sluggish lymphatic system can also cause indurations, as the body then has difficulty getting rid of excess fluid/waste products satisfactorily. The waste products then accumulate in the connective tissue, eventually causing pain. Indurated connective tissue, in turn, leads to impaired blood circulation. Indurated connective tissue and poor blood circulation can lead to so-called cellulite skin.
Cupping's Potential Impact on the Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is one of the most important and complex systems in the human body. It is essentially the lymphatic system that is responsible for purification in our bodies. If the removal of waste products does not function satisfactorily, they accumulate in the connective tissue instead and can cause pain.
If waste products are not transported away and instead remain in the tissues for too long, they can eventually be converted and stored as fat and connective tissue. The waste products can then manifest as cellulite, and the body becomes swollen.
For the lymphatic system to function optimally and efficiently handle viruses, bacteria, and waste products, we must move, drink plenty of water, and eat a good diet. But even if we do this, it may still be too little to keep the lymph flow optimal. Cupping, and particularly dynamic cupping where the cups are glided over the skin, stimulates lymphatic circulation and therefore leads to an effective cleansing of waste products and a stronger immune system.
For lymphatic drainage, hold the cup in the direction of the lymph nodes to help flush away waste and toxins. Do not leave cups on the lymph nodes.
