Under-eye bags, a swollen, puffy face in the morning and a double chin are three of the most common things people want to do something about, and they often have different causes that need different measures. Fluid that has collected overnight, after salty food, alcohol, crying or little sleep, can be influenced directly with lymphatic massage, cold and movement. Fat under the eyes or under the chin, which is hereditary or comes with age, is not affected by massage, only by weight, time or procedures. Skin that has lost firmness and tight jaw and neck muscles sit in between: regular stimulation of circulation and relaxation of the muscles can give a fresher, more defined impression, but does not change the anatomy. Here is how to tell the causes apart, what actually helps with what, when facial swelling should be assessed by a doctor and a simple 5-minute routine with lymphatic massage and facial cupping that many people do in the morning.
Fluid, fat or skin? How to tell the causes apart
| What you see | Likely cause | Signs | What helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under-eye bags in the morning, better later in the day | Fluid (lymph) that has collected while you were lying down | Varies day to day, worse after salt, alcohol, crying, little sleep, allergy | Lymphatic massage, cold, a higher pillow, less salt, sleep, allergy treatment |
| Bags that are there all day, year after year | Fat pads that bulge forward as the tissue around the eye weakens with age, often hereditary | Same size morning and evening, more visible when you look up | Massage changes nothing; camouflage, skincare for the surrounding skin, in some cases surgery |
| Dark circles | Thin skin, visible vessels, pigment, shadows from bags or hollowness | Look like shadows, more visible when tired | Sleep, sun protection, moisturising; circulation helps somewhat with "blue" circles |
| Puffy face in the morning | Fluid, often together with salty food, alcohol, heat, hormones (period), little sleep | The whole face feels puffy, rings feel tighter, passes during the day | Lymphatic massage, cold water, movement, drinking water, less salt |
| Double chin | Fat under the chin (hereditary, weight), loose skin and platysma muscle (age), or a forward head posture that makes the chin "disappear" | There regardless of time of day; a forward posture gives more "double chin" in the mirror and in photos | Posture, weight if relevant, muscle relaxation in jaw and neck; massage does not shape away fat |
When facial swelling should be assessed by a doctor
Call emergency services if the face, lips or tongue swell quickly together with breathing difficulty, hives or dizziness; it may be a serious allergic reaction. See a doctor if the swelling is one-sided, warm, red and tender (infection), if it sits around one eye with pain, fever or affected vision, if you have facial swelling together with swollen legs, breathlessness or foamy urine (heart, kidneys, thyroid), if the swelling came after a new medicine, or if bags and swelling have appeared quickly without explanation. Ordinary morning puffiness that passes during the day does not need assessment.
What helps, cause by cause
- For fluid (morning bags and a puffy face): sleep with the head slightly raised, reduce salt and alcohol in the evening, drink normally during the day, treat allergies, rinse the face with cold water in the morning and do the lymphatic massage below. Movement and a short walk get the whole body's lymph moving. Fluid retention in the rest of the body: Fluid retention in the body.
- For fat bags and a fatty double chin: be honest with yourself: no massage, cream or cup removes fat. What has an effect is weight change (if relevant), time and possibly aesthetic procedures, which you then discuss with licensed healthcare. What we can do is reduce the fluid around it and improve the skin's radiance, which often makes a difference to the impression.
- For loose skin and tight muscles (neck, jaw): daily posture training (draw the chin straight back, not up, hold for five seconds, ten times), relaxation of the jaw muscles (see Teeth grinding and tight jaw), sun protection and moisturising skincare, and regular stimulation of circulation with facial massage or facial cupping. Posture is the underrated factor: a head carried over the shoulders instead of in front of them does more for the jawline than any product.
- For dark circles: sleep, sun protection, a moisturising eye cream and light lymphatic massage; much is hereditary and does not change.
- For the whole picture: sleep, water, less alcohol and sugar, and not smoking affect the skin's puffiness and radiance more than any single treatment.
5-minute routine: lymphatic massage and facial cupping for puffiness
The routine follows the direction of lymph in the face: from the middle outwards towards the ears and then down along the neck towards the collarbones. It is done with clean hands and, if you like, the face cup or the mini face cup for the area around the eyes, always with face oil so the cup glides. The suction should be very light; on the face the cup should never stand still.
- Open at the collarbones and neck (30 sec). Stroke lightly with the fingers in the hollows above the collarbones ten times, then down along the sides of the neck from the ear towards the collarbone, ten strokes per side.
- Jawline (1 min). Oil. Glide the face cup with light suction from the middle of the chin along the jawbone out towards the ear, five strokes per side, then continue with the fingers down the neck. This is the stroke that gives a more defined impression of the jaw when the puffiness releases.
- Cheeks (1 min). From the side of the nose out over the cheek towards the ear, five strokes per side, and from the corner of the mouth towards the earlobe.
- Under the eyes (1 min). Switch to the mini face cup or use your ring finger. Very light suction or pressure, from the inner corner of the eye outwards along the bony rim under the eye towards the temple, five strokes per side. Never on the eyelid itself, never so that the skin is pulled.
- Forehead and temples (30 sec). From the middle of the forehead out towards the temples, then down in front of the ear.
- Finish downwards (1 min). Stroke all the way from the temple, past the ear, down the neck to the collarbone, ten times per side, so the fluid has a way out. Rinse with cold water if you like.
Do the routine in the morning when the puffiness is greatest, daily for a period and then as needed. The effect on fluid is visible immediately and lasts a few hours to a day; with regularity the morning puffiness becomes less. When not to cup the face
Not on the eyelids or the eye itself, not on active acne, rosacea in a flare, eczema, wounds or sunburnt skin, not over fillers or botox in the first two weeks after treatment (ask your practitioner), not with an ongoing infection or swelling that should be assessed, not with strong suction anywhere on the face, and not without medical advice if you take blood thinners or bruise easily. The cup should always be moving on the face.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of bags under my eyes?
It depends on the cause. Morning bags from fluid reduce with lymphatic massage, cold, a higher pillow, less salt and sleep. Bags that are there all day are usually fat and are not affected by massage; then it is skincare around them, camouflage or in some cases surgery.
Does facial cupping help with a double chin?
For fluid and tight muscles in the jaw and neck yes, and the jawline is often experienced as more defined after the routine. For fat under the chin no. Posture, with the chin drawn back over the shoulders, often makes the biggest difference in the mirror.
Why is my face puffy in the morning?
When you lie down, fluid is distributed evenly in the body instead of being drawn downwards, and the lymph in the face moves more slowly. Salty food, alcohol, heat, hormones and little sleep increase the puffiness. It passes once you have been up for a while, faster with movement and lymphatic massage.
How often should you do lymphatic massage on the face?
Daily in the morning when you want to reduce puffiness, five minutes is enough. For maintenance a few times a week. The effect on fluid is immediate but short-lived; regularity gives less morning puffiness over time.
Can I cup under the eyes?
Yes, with a small cup and very light suction along the bony rim under the eye, always moving outwards towards the temple, never on the eyelid. The skin there is thin; if you get marks or redness that stay, the suction was too strong.
